Beville When I was born there was great excitement in my family……”a red-head!” just like my grandmothers on both sides of the family.  Do I need to mention that I’m the fairest of fair complexion with all the sensitivities of a true “red-head”? It all started innocently enough.  My childhood was spent in Vancouver, BC. (Canada) where my father pursued his doctorate in chemistry.  I pursued my passion for swimming.  At 6 years old my family moved to Northern California where my father began his career as a research chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (he retired at the same job 35 years later).  I joined the local swim team. From 6-12 years old I was an avid swimmer and spent as much time as I could at the local swim club.  My fair skin suffered.  It was not unusual for me to suffer multiple blistering sunburns.  My nose was red and peeling year round.  The dermatologist warned me and my parents that my year-round red nose was an indication of severe sun damage.  He recommended sun screen and zinc oxide.   Right….what kid wants to be the geeky red-head at the swim club walking around with a white nose!

Then I became an impressionable pre-teen.  At 12 years old I spent a spring break visiting my grandmother in Florida.  She took us to the water park Wet n’ Wild.  At the park I saw another “red-head”, a beautiful, mature, red-headed goddess with an incredible golden tan.  I knew that if tried harder I could become golden too!  I dedicated myself to this golden ideal through high school while continuing my swimming.  I just couldn’t wait till practice was over so I could peel off my one piece and slip into a bikini in the hot California sunshine with my spray bottle of baby oil and iodine, trying to achieve that perfect golden tan. 

It did not occur to me until my late 20’s that the golden, “red-headed” goddess at Wet n’ Wild dyed her hair.

By the time I entered my 30’s I had a medical career and was a regular at the dermatologist’s office. When my dermatologist did a multiple area skin biopsy test every biopsy came back as pre-cancerous.   I had my first skin cancer at 31 (thankfully it was a basal cell and not malignant). 

It took that little wake-up call at 31 to prompt me to consider taking better care of my skin. 

I began to listen to my dermatologist during my monthly visits and learn about serious skin care.   I used my medical background to navigate around the “miracle cream” claims and rely on clinical trials and scientific evidence.   I became passionate about skin care and pursued a license as an esthetician followed by opening a luxury retreat and spa with an emphasis on skin care.

Everything then logically falls into place.
