Pure essential oils:  fragrant oils extracted from botanicals using steam distillation

EO2-Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)-Utah, Egypt….anti-spasmodic, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, regenerates skin, sedating, calming, decongestant, reduces scarring/acne. Chamomile is a cleanser of the blood, helps increase liver function, and supports the pancreas. Promotes the regeneration of skin and can be used for abscesses, burns, rashes, cuts, dermatitis, teething pains, acne, eczema, infected nails, cystitis, inflamed joints, menopausal problems, toothaches, ulcers, wounds, and stress related complaints.

EO3-Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)-Utah, France…estrogen-like, supports hormones, anti-infecteous, anti-bacterial, relaxing, helps with PMS and menopause, anti-fungal, anti-diabetic, treats hemorrhoids and dandruff. The name “clary” sage came from the nickname for “clear eyes” given in the Middle Ages for its ability to cure eye conditions.

EO4-Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus polybracTea)-Australia, Brazil…anti-infectious, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, bug repellant. Treatment for acne and cystitis. For centuries Australian Aboriginals used the leaves as a disinfectant to cover wounds. Shown by laboratory tests to be a powerful anti-microbial agent, eucalyptus has often been used for the respiratory system as well as a powerful insect repellant. Eucalyptus trees have been planted throughout parts of North Africa to successfully block the spread of malaria. According to Jean Valnet, MD, a solution of 2% eucalyptus oil will kill 70% of airborne staph bacteria. Some doctors still use solutions of eucalyptus oil in surgical dressings. Has also been used to effectively treat herpes simplex and vaginitis.

EO6-Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)-Egypt, India….used to treat acne, burns, eczema, regenerates tissue, ringworm, shingles, wounds, anti-inflammatory, astringent, anti-fungal, antitumoral, balances sebum. Geranium has been used for centuries for skin care.

EO10-Lavender (Lavandula angustilolia) antitumoral, analgesic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, prevents build up of sebum, a skin oil that bacteria feed on.The French scientist Rene Gatefosse was the first to discover lavender’s ability to promote tissue regeneration and speed wound healing when he severly burned his arm in a laboratory accident. Today, lavender is still one of the few essential oils to still be listed in the British Pharmacopeia.

EO11-Lemon (Citrus limon)-California, Italy…Anti-infectious, disinfectant, antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral. Lemon improves microcirculation, promotes white blood cell formation, and improves immune function. The vaporized essence of lemon can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, staph in two hours, diptheri in 20 minutes, and it can inactivate tuberculosis bacteria. Lemon oil has been widely used in skin care to cleanse skin and reduce wrinkles.

EO12-Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)-India, Guatemala…tones skin, regenerates tissue, dilates blood vessels, anti-inflammatory, and promotes lymph flow. Lemongrass is effective at tissue regeneration.

EO13-Lime (Citrus aurantifolia)-Mexico…antibacterial, anti-infectious, clears up acne, astringent, uplifting, promotes mental clarity, controls excess sebum production in skin, tones skin and enhances circulation.

EO14-Melissa (Melissa officinalis)-Utah, Idaho, France…anti-inflammatory, calming, sedative, fights against chlorella, antimicrobial, treats cold sores, blisters, insect bites, eczema. Melissa was the main ingredient in Carmelite water, distilled in France since 1611 be Carmelite Monks. One application will clear up herpes simplex.

EO17-Orange (Citrus aurantium)-U.S.A., South Africa, Italy, China…calming, sedative, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, anti-coagulant, clears up dull or oily complexions, dermatitis, supports tissue repair, softens and reduces wrinkles, and relieves muscle soreness.

EO19-Peppermint (Mentha piperita)-North America…..anticarcinogenic, expels worms, decongestant, anti-infectious, antibacterial, antifungal, pain relieving, expectorant, anti-inflammatory. Heals eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and itchy skin.

EO21-Pink Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi)-California…antiseptic, antifungal, detoxifying, diuretic, has unique fat dissolving characteristics, cleansing for oily skin, antidepressant. Anti-acne, anti-cellulite, diminishes starch marks. Can help with drug withdrawal, eating disorders, fatigue, jet lag, stress, and premenstrual tension.

EO22-Rose(Rosa damascena)-Bulgaria, Turkey…anti-inflammatory, prevents and reduces scarring, clears up herpes as well as other skin diseases, balances and elevates the mind. The Arab physician Avicenna was responsible for first distilling rose oil, eventually authoring an entire book on the healing attributes of the rose oil and rose water derived from the distillation of the rose.

EO23-Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis )- France, USA….antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic, general stimulant, enhances mental clarity, supports nerve and endocrine balance, stimulates the scalp. The name of the oil is derived from the Latin words for dew of the sea (ros-marinus).

EO24-Sage (Salvia officinalis)-Spain, Croatia, France…. Expectorant, anti-infectious, estrogen-like, prevents and reduces scarring, regulates circulation, soothes skin conditions. Beneficial for acne, arthritis, bacterial infections, dandruff, depression, eczema, hair loss, sores, and sprains. Known as “herba sacra” or sacred herb by the ancient Romans, sage’s name, Salvia, is derived from the word for “salvation”.

EO26-Spearmint (Mentha spicata)-Utah….anti-inflammatory, astringent, antiseptic, calming, clears up candida, cysts, acne, bad breath, eczema, helps promote easier labor during childbirth, and supports weight loss. Has hormone-like activities that supports a sense of balance and well being.

EO28-Tangerine (Citrus nobilis)-USA, Africa….promotes happiness, helps with anxiety and nervousness, dissolves cellulite, clears parasites, removes stretch marks, and relieves fluid retention.

EO34: Cacao (Theobroma Cacao): A deep chocolate liquid extracted from the nut of the cacao tree. Grown in the jungles of the world, this super anti-oxidant concentrate is higher in Vitamin C than an orange and has twenty-times the anti-oxidant content of green tea. Anti-aging for the skin; anti-inflammatory; regenerates cellular tissue; promotes circultion; adds "real" chocolate to any product. A potent stimulant and aphrodesiac.

 

Almond meal: prunus amygdalus- Exfoliant; used as an abrasive for exfoliation. These are usually pulverized and blanched almonds.

Almond Butter: prunus amygdalus- Derived from sweet almonds specifically from the Mediterranean area. Cold processed. Moisturizing, full of minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.

Organic Aloe Vera: aloe barbadensis leaf juice- Botanical, moisturizer, skin protectant, humectant. A member of the South African aloe plant leaf, usually a juice, containing water, amino acids and carbohydrates, used as a moisturizer, stabilizer, and light tonic for the skin.

Alpha Hydroxy: glycolic acid: AHA – Anti-aging, antioxidant; fruit based. Is sometimes combined with phospholipids and Acidophilus. Skin cell renewal and cell shedding. Glycolic Acid is found in simple sugars. Glycolic Acid works by dissolving the intercellular cement responsible for abnormal keratinization (discoloration of the skin), improving skin hydration by enhanced moisture uptake, binding water to the stratum corneum.

Alpha Lipoic Acid- antioxidant; Anti-aging applications have been noted due to its antioxidant nature. A popular new ingredient for skin crèmes. Helps to smooth fine lines in mature skin. Accelerates the sloughing off of dead skin, diminishing the signs of actinic keratosis (discoloration of the skin). Skin cell renewal and cell shedding.

Apricot Kernel oil: prunus armeniaca- Emollient/moisturizer. A natural nut/vegetable oil pressed from the kernel of the apricot, for penetrating and softening. Non-greasy feel. High content of Vitamin E. Some claim it can aid the skin in retaining elasticity and suppleness. Is a triglyceride containing oleic and linoleic acid. Another natural replacement for mineral oil. Used by the Hunza people for millennia, contributing to their being the healthiest and longest living people in the world. Mimics the skins natural sebum and is readily absorbed into skin. A great carrier oil as well.

Arnica: arnica montana- Anti-inflammatory; botanical; skin protectant; bruise and discoloration inhibitor. This is from a plant containing healing and astringent properties. It is sometimes taken internally to help reduce bruising prior to cosmetic surgery. Germany’s Commission E (Germany’s equivalent to US FDA) has approved arnica for external use for injuries.

Arrowroot: maranta arudinacea- Botanical/Absorbent. Named by the Indians as it was used for healing wounds caused by arrows. Its chemical makeup is one of a starch.

Ascorbic acid- Antioxidant; Vitamin C preservative. A chemical component of Vitamin C and free radical fighter. Can be used to lessen skin pigmentation. Is found in fruits and vegetables. Essential for the production of collagen in the skin.

Avocado Oil: persea gratissima- Anti-irritant; emollient; moisturizer. Has cleansing applications as well as a moisturizing carrier oil.

Beeswax- Emollient. A wax produced by bees, used as a wax base or for smoothing the skin.

Bentonite- Porous clay from volcanic ash. Is used in facial masks as an absorbent, also as an emulsifier, thickener, and stabilizer. Bentonite is considered noncomedogenic. It is a colloidal aluminum silicate clay.

Borage Oil: borago officinalis- Emollient; moisturizer; ointment base; botanical. Considered useful for sensitive skin. This comes from a hardy annual. Mostly the leaves are used; sometimes the flowers.

Camillia Oil: camellia sasanqua- Anti-aging; emollient; carrier; moisturizer. High content of oleic acid. Helps in role of anti-oxidation and is fairly non-greasy.

Camphor: cinnamomum camphora- Is used as an anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, cooling, and is thought to be slightly stimulating to blood circulation. Derived from a species of tree in the Orient that resembles the Evergreen tree.

Canola Oil- Carrier; emollient; moisturizer. Extracted from rapeseed oil. It is considered to be a natural replacement to Mineral Oil. Has good emolliency and lubrication.

Carrot Oil: daucus carota sativa- Botanical; emollient; anti-aging; skin protectant. This carotene rich emollient is derived from the carrot root. A good source of Vitamin A. Used in some cosmetics to treat skin blemishes or to assist with creating a tan stain in conjunction with other ingredients. Also some application indicated for dermatitis and skin rashes by some estheticians.

Cetyl Alcohol- An emollient and emulsifier. The term alcohol here is a real disservice to this ingredient as it is really a fat substance. Produced from Palm Oil usually, but it is also found in Coconut and other vegetable oils (it can be made synthetically too). Considered by some sources to be non-comedogenic, it is a moisturizer (not at all a drying alcohol).

Citric Acid- Acidulent; AHA; buffer. Often used to adjust the pH of a product.

Citronella- Used primarily in lotions, gels, and sprays as a natural bug repellent. Especially effective when combined with other natural essential oils that also repel insects and fleas- see our Pet and People section.

Cocoa Butter: theobroma cacao- Emollient; skin conditioner; skin protectant. A luscious moisturizing fat that has a high melting point so it is often observed as a solid. Good lubrication. Super hign mineral content, vitamin C content, and feel good “love” chemicals.

Coconut Oil: cocos nucifera- Carrier; emollient; lubricant; skin conditioner. Coconut oil is a group of mostly short-chain fatty acids bonded with Vegetable Glycerin and expressed from coconut kernels. Used often in natural soap/cleanser manufacturing. When soaponified, it assists with production of rich abundant lather. Unparalleled quality. Natural anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial,anti-oxidant, anti-aging. The most stable oil known to man. Will not putrify or go rancid.

Colloidal Silver- A powerful healing agent and natural antibiotic.

Corn Silk: zea mays-Botanical.

Dead Sea Concentrate: sodium chloride- Contains trace minerals from the Dead Sea. Minerals from the Dead Sea, which are intensified in the dried salt compounds, contain a varied source of minerals that have shown promise as detoxifiers and purifiers. Evening Primrose Oil: oenothera biennis- Emollient; skin conditioner; botanical. Has been used as a base builder for natural estrogen production in the body. It is also a light, non-oily moisturizer.

Flax oil: linum usitatissimum- From linseed oil; botanical; emollient. Natures riches plant source of Omega-3EFA (alpha-linolenic acid) at approximately 54%. Omega-EFA is beneficial for dry skin and tissue inflammations.

Grapefruit Seed : citrus grandis- Antioxidant; botanical. Sometimes known as citricidal. It has proved to have some antibacterial properties. Extracted from the seeds of grapefruits.

Grape Seed oil: vitis vinifera- Antioxidant; carrier; emollient; moisturizer. Contains natural Vitamin E and is good in massage oils. Has a high linoleic acid content. An amazing anti-oxidant, for anti-aging benefits. One of the most nutritive oils known to man.

Hemp Oil: cannabis sativa oil- Emollient; moisturizer; vegetable oil. Hemp seed oil is considered an ideal companion to Flax Seed oil. It is a natural emollient with a “shady” but interesting past.

Honey: mel- Emollient; humectant; skin conditioner; hair conditioner. Honey is composed of several sugars and other substances, including malic, formic, citric, and lactic acids as well as enzymes and amino acids. A highly complex substance.

Jojoba Oil: simmondsia chinensis- Emollient; moisturizer. Very high natural content of Vitamin E. Extremely skin nourishing. Lasts longer in natural state than most oils. Has been credited with skin healing. Provides rapid absorbtion.

Kaolin- Absorption base; anticaking; from earth clays. Is a mixture of various aluminum silicates. Has absorption abilites for both water and oil.

Kelp: macrocystis pyrifera- Botanical. Sea Kelp is full of trace minerals from the sea. Nutritive value to skin. Has been used in Asia for soothing burns and rashes. Stimulating, revitalizing, and nourishing to the skin due to its sulfur amino acid and iodine content. Kelp has anti-inflammatory and disinfectant properties. When harvested correctly it is full of natural vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Kokum Butter: garcinia indica- Emollient; moisturizer. Kokum butter is obtained from the fruit of the Indian tree. The butter is extracted from the fruit kernels. Moisturizes skin and helps reduce wrinkles. Reduces degeneration of the skin cells and restores flexibility.

Kukui Nut oil: aleurites molaccana- Emollient; moisturizer; vegetable oil. Prized as a very emoillent oil from Polynesia. Hawaiians used it to soothe burns, cuts and to protect skin from irritations. Has shown some effectiveness in soothing psoriasis and eczema as it does not leave an oily after residue. High linoleic and linolenic acid content.

Liquid Glycerin- A natural humectant and affordable moisturizer. Vegetable based.

Macadamia nut oil: macadamia ternifolia- Emollient; moisturizer; vegetable oil. A highly volatile yet wonderfully moisturizing oil. Its fatty acid composition is similar to a fatty acid of sebum. Beneficial to dry skin, and has a non-greasy after-feel. The oil is derived from the nuts of the macadamia tree (closely related to hazelnut). Contains triglycerides and palmitoleic properties.

Menthol: laevo menthol- Cooling agent; flavor. Penetrating and cooling sensation. Derived from peppermint.

Milk Proteins: lactis proteinum- Anti-aging; conditioner; skin protectant. Milk gives a smooth feel to skin. Full of amino acids and casein amino acids. Casein is well absorbed by the skin and gives it a gloss and fine touch by forming a soft protective film. Soothing; anti-inflammatory.

MSM-Opti-MSM: Methylsulfonylmethane- Methylsulfonylmethane has been present in the oceans, soil, and atmosphere of the Earth for eons. Organic sulfur (MSM) occurs naturally in the human body. It actually makes up 5% of the human body and is essential for every organ, cell, tissue, hormone, enzyme, antibody, and function found in the body. This whole food is a beautifying mineral, and contributes to hair, skin, nail, and joint renewal and health. Bioavailable, MSM must be continually replenished for optimal youth, nutrition and health. Noni: morinda citrifolia (Polynesian Noni)- Hawaiians swear by this ingredient that comes from a green fruit. They have been using it to eat, drink, and used as a part of healing ointments for years. Pungent; amber in color. Used for healing cuts and bruises by the Polynesians. Full of bioflavonoids, plant sterols and beneficial alkaloids and phytonutrients.

Oil of Tamanu: calophyllum inophyllum- Tamanu oil possesses a unique capacity to promote the formation of new tissue which accelerates wound healing. The process of forming new tissue is known as cicatrisation. Oil of Tamanu appears to be one of the most effective known cicatrizing agents in nature. Calophyllum inophyllum means “beautiful leaf” and comes from a tree indigenous to Southeast Asia (also in Polynesia where it is known as Ati).

Olive Oil: olea europaea- A great light barrier oil rich in Polyphenols and antioxidants. Soothes and hydrates skin. High in Polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants and nutrient rich. Long lasting, stable oil. Used often to help soothe burns and scrapes, in an extra pure form called “Sweet Oil.”

Orange Peel Tincture: citrus aurantium dulcis- Anti-inflammatory; antibacterial; antiseptic. Contains properties considered to be toning and antiseptic. Also some anti-fungal properties present.

Oregano Oil: rhus coriaria- This is claimed to be an antioxidant, with properties to assist in inhibition of bacterial growth and inhibiting the growth of fungi. Assists with decreasing inflammation as a detoxifier.

Papaya Enzyme: carica papaya- Antioxidant. Contains a considerable amount of Papain, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Beta Carotene, and enzymes. Some antiseptic properties.

Pheromone Products: Male and female pheromones can be used in a wide range of products. Call if you have any interest.

Pomegranate: Punica Gradatum-Botanical. The highest source of antioxidants known.

Propolis- Skin treatment. Bees collect a substance from the buds of trees resembling resin. They convert this resin into Propolis. This flavonoid rich substance has both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, working also as an anti-toxin. It is a germ resistant coating.

Pumice- Abrasive; exfoliant; from earth/rock.

Pumpkin Seed Oil: cucurbita pepo- Emollient; moisturizer; vegetable oil. Has a long and beneficial history in the maintenance of male and female health. It is also a good source of Omega-6 and Omega-9.

Red Wine : vitis vinifera- Antioxidant; carrier; emollient; moisturizer. No skin care claims yet established. This is a derivative of red wine tannins as a natural byproduct from wine production

Sweet Almond Oil: prunus amygdalus dulcis- An emollient/moisturizer; a natural vegetable oil pressed from almonds used for penetrating and softening. Massage therapists have long used this moisturizing oil for massage. Is used to soften dry skin and to help relieve dry, itchy and irritated skin. Main component is olein with a small proportion of glyceride. Similar to Olive Oil. Elegant skin feel.

Tamanu Oil: calophyllum inophyllum- For superior skin care this unusual oil will put your product on the map. Extreme youthening properties in this oil.

Tea Tree: melaleuca alternifolia- Anti-inflammatory; antibacterial; antimicrobial. Much research has been done on this ingredient’s natural antiseptic strength qualities.

Thyme: thymus vulgaris- Antimicrobial; botanical. Skin care uses are as a skin tonic and also the herb Thyme works to repel certain insects.

Tocopheryl Acetate: Vitamin E- Anti-inflammatory; antioxidant; emollient. Has long been associated with accelerated healing. Is used a lot in burn and scar medical therapy units to assist the skin in healing.

Wheat Germ Oil: triticum vulgare- Antioxidant; emollient; moisturizer. One of the heaviest of oils. A thick, extra rich oil that contains Vitamin E naturally.

White Tea : camellia sinensis- Anti-aging; anti-inflammatory; anti-irritant. A great source of Polyphenols. Contains catechins that are potent anti-oxidants.

White Willow Bark : salix alba- Is a chemical found in some plants, particularly in the leaves of Wintergreen and bark of Sweet Birch. Antiseptic. Used in acne soaps and cleansers. It can help dissolve the top layer of corneum cells and thereby improve the look and feel of the skin.

Wintergreen: methyl salicylate - From wintergreen; antiseptic; flavor. Penetration and analgesic.

Witch Hazel: hamamelis virginiana- Anti-inflammatory; astringent; botanical. A natural astringent and antiseptic. A good natural replacement for traditional alcohol.

We have also included some terminology below that might be helpful for you to know in this industry. We have not included all of our ingredients in this list because most of our ingredients are easy to understand. We have simply made a list of ingredients that sometimes need translation

Abrasive: a rough, granule used to smooth the skin (in use of sanding the skin to a smoother finish)

Absorbent/Absorption: able to absorb or transferred of one ingredient or base by another

Accelerator: any ingredient or group of ingredients that speeds action or absorption

Acid: having a pH number below 7.0- the opposite of an alkali- Alkali has a pH number above 7.0

Acidulent: acidifies, neutralizes alkalis, and lowers pH

Activator: a chemical substance used to start the action of another chemical or group of chemicals

Additive: any added ingredient as added to an existing substance

Allantoin: Used as a humectant, conditioner, and detoxicant, it has anti-irritant and soothing properties. It is a by-product of uric acid and found naturally in comfrey root and Uva Ursi.

Ammonium Laurel Sulfate: A surfactant that is used as a foaming and cleansing agent. It starts out as a mineral but is synthesized. We believe this surfactant to be much gentler than others on the market

Analgesic: relieves pain

Antibacterial: An agent or process that inhibits the reproduction and growth of bacteria. We have some essential oils and special natural ingredients available for this use. Inhibits or destroys the growth/reproduction of bacteria.

Anti-caking: Prevents or retards caking of powders; keeps powders free-flowing

Anti-dandruff: retards and/or eliminates dandruff

Anti-fungal: an agent that inhibits or stops the growth of fungi

Anti-inflammatory: reduces, suppresses, and counteracts inflammation

Antioxidants: Substances that prevent the formation of free radicals, which can cause the oxidative deterioration, rancidity, and premature aging. Some examples of natural antioxidants that we use include Vitamins A, C and E. Inhibits oxidation and helps by depressing rancidity and retarding skin damage by environmental factors such as pollution (we use Vitamin C, which is a known anti-oxidant). An agent that prevents negative oxidation and prevents fats or oils from spoilage.

Antiseptic: is an agent that slows, kills or otherwise stops the growth of bacteria

Astringents: ingredients that cause a tightening and contraction of the pores and skin tissues and are also used to tone the skin

Balm: a resinous or waxy substance used as a medicine, emollient distribution or fragrance distribution

Binder: binding or cohesion of powders

Calcium Carbonate: a naturally occurring calcium salt found in limestone and coral; it has no known toxicity

Carbomer: high molecular weight cross-linked polymers used in very small amounts in our products; only when needed for thickening and suspending

Carrier: a medium or base used for a preparation as a carrier for main ingredients or essential/fragrance

Ceteth-20: sometimes used as an emulsifier for oil-in-water crèmes and lotions; non-irritating in small percentages; co-emulsifier; is a vegetable oil derivative

Cetearyl Alcohol: this is NOT an ethanol-related product; it is a FAT and is a moisturizer

Cetyl Alcohol: this is NOT an ethanol-related product; it is a FAT and is a moisturizer

Citric Acid: from citrus fruits; used as a pH modifier in cosmetics and food

Cocomide DEA: this is an unchanged (non-ionic) surfactant derived from coconut oil

Cocomide MEA: a surfactant/foaming agent derived from coconuts as an alternative to Cocomide DEA

Cocomidopropyl Betaine: this is a member of the Betaine family and is used as a mild foaming and cleansing agent to reduce the irritancy of harsher surfactants in shampoos (from coconut)

Desiccant: a drying agent

Detergent: a surface-active agent that cleans by emulsifying oils and suspending particulate matter

Detoxifier: a material that removes toxins, either locally or systemically

Urea: a synthetic preservative that is used at less than 1%; very safe at those levels; helps block mold, yeast, and bacteria in products; used only when necessary

Dimethicone: this is an inert, safe form that helps with “anti-tack” or “anti-sticky” in a product

Disinfectant: destroys pathogenic microorganisms

Emollient: a substance that softens or smoothes the surface of the skin

Emulsifier: ingredients that help suspend two or more liquids that are normally not easily soluble to prevent separation

Emulsifying Wax: an emulsifier and thickening agent used to give body to a formula; permits the formulation of stable crèmes

Enzyme: complex protein produced by living cells that catalyze biochemical reactions, often at or near human body temperature

Essential oils: a natural, usually plant-derived, oil used for fragrance and/or active properties

Exfoliant: helps to loosen dead surface skin cells to expose new skin and a fresher, smother looking skin surface

Fixative: an ingredient or mix of ingredients that sets fragrance or essential oils, helps retard evaporation, and promotes longer lasting aroma

Glycerin: can be manufactured from animal or plant material; we use only vegetable glycerin of the highest grade; it is a humectant and moisturizer

Glycerol Stearate: depending on its use, it can be used as an emulsifier, surfactant aid, thickener, stabilizer, or emollient in cosmetic formulations; it is a by-product of glycerol (glycerin derivative) and Stearic acid

Glycol Monostearate: from vegetable-based glycerin

Humectant: a substance (for example glycerin) that reduces water loss from the skin and aids in moisturization; can sometimes pull moisture from air to skin

Hydantoin DMDM: a synthetic preservative that is used at less than 1%; very safe at those levels; helps block mold, yeast, and bacteria in products; used only when necessary

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: (from wheat) conditioning, moisturizing, and film-forming properties; helps retain

moisture in the skin; replaces animal protein because we do not use animal by-products except a small amount of a lanolin derivative in a couple of products (lanolin is derived from shearing the sheep, and the animal does not need to be injured or killed in this process)

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose: this is a cellulose-based product from trees and sometimes vegetables, used mostly for assisting with “thickening” a product

Hydroxyethylcellulose: a modified form of corn that is used as a thickening agent

Palm Oil: a moisturizer and emollient that is naturally based; this is produced from the combination of palmitic acid (coconut or palm oil) and isopropyic alcohol; enzymes are able to metabolize this ingredient and there are no studies showing allergic reactions or toxicity

Maltodextrin: desiccant, gentle, used a lot in the food industry

Magnesium Sulfate: a natural mineral that is mined from the earth, known for its anti-inflammatory abilities

Methylparaben: a synthetic preservative used for many years in foods; safe when used in small amounts; we only require a very small amount in some of our products for bacteria control; when we do not feel we need them, we do not use them

PEG 100: used in small amounts as an oil/water emulsifier from petrol base

pH Buffer: helps maintain original pH (acidity or basicity) of a preparation

Phenoxyethanol: a synthetic preservative that is used at less than 1%; very safe at those levels; helps block mold, yeast, and bacteria in products; used only when necessary

Polysorbate 20: sometimes used as a solubizer, emulsifier, and modifier of oil/water products; very low irritation evidence found when used in small amounts in formulas

PPG 14: this is from cellulose (trees and vegetables) that is a liquid “slip” agent that helps create slide

Propylparaben: a synthetic preservative used for many years in foods; safe when used only in small amounts; we only require a very small amount in some of our products for bacteria; when we do not feel we need them, we do not use them

Propylene Glycol: excluding water, this is the most common moisture-carrying substance used in cosmetic formulas; it leaves a non-greasy feel and is used often as a humectant; also serves as a solvent for antioxidants and preservatives; it can be an irritant at high concentrations, but is safe at levels of 5% or lower; we use it only when necessary to enhance feel of formula; this is a synthetic ingredient so we only use it when we need to, and at very small percentages

Silica: mined from the earth; sometimes used as a carrier for emollients; spherical silica is porous and absorbent and can absorb approx. 1.5 times its weight; sometimes used as a desiccant

Sodium Borate: a natural-based Sodium salt; has properties effective as a water softener, emulsifier, and has astringent/antiseptic properties; can be harmful in pH adjustment

Sodium Chloride: salt as we know it; salt may have many different natural enhancing ingredients attached to it depending on where it was derived (for example, Dead-Sea salts have lots of minerals attached but is still Sodium Chloride)

Solubilizer: solubilizes, usually into aqueous vehicles, normally insoluble material, examples such as fragrances, oils, etc.

Sorbic Acid: is a preservative that is sometimes used when pH processing is below 4.0 pH level

Sorbitol: from leaves and sometimes berries or mountain ash and cherries, plums, pears, seaweed, and algae; similar to glycerin in that it is a humectant

Strearalkonium Chloride: a man-made emollient made from Stearic acid

Stearic Acid: an emulsifier and thickening agent found in many vegetable fats; used in making bar soaps and lubricants

Styrene Acrylate Copolymer: a copolymer used in small amounts which helps obtain white-opaque appearance to otherwise clear products

Surfactant: a foam booster or foaming agent typically gentler than a detergent

Treithanolamine: an emulsifier and pH adjuster; safe when used in small amounts (this is the only way we use it and only when needed)

Tetrasodium EDTA: a synthetic preservative that is used at less than 1%; very safe at those levels; helps block mold, yeast, and bacteria in products; used only when necessary

Titanium Dioxide: from natural mineral salts used for lightening a product

Viscosity: refers to the thickness and degree of pourability or stickiness of a product; high viscosity is very thick, like a hand crème or honey, and low viscosity is readily pourable and thin like water

Whitening Agent: evens and lightens color, often by inhibiting melanin formation

Lemon EO Botanical Name: Citrus limonum Common Uses: Lemon has been historically recognized as a cleanser. It is recognized as being antiseptic, and as having refreshing and cooling properties. Research has also shown lemon essential oil to enhance the a bility to concentrate.

Eucalyptus Staigeriana Eucalyptus Staigeriana, also known as Lemon Iron Bark or Lemon-Scented Ironbark, has a lemon-scented aroma and can be used as anti viral, antiseptic, expectorant, anti inflammatory and a digestive stimulant. It is not cineol-rich, so can be used people with sensitive skin.

 Eucalyptus Radiata Eucalyptus Radiata is commonly known as “narrow-leaved Peppermint” and contains a high percentage of cineol, also known as eucalyptol, popularly used to relieve colds and congestion. Eucalyptus Radiata is preferred over Eucalyptus Globulus because it is less harsh, more pleasant to inhale and less likely to irritate the skin.
